Geri Halliwell's Daily Mail Interview

After years struggling with the way she looks, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell is at last happy in her own skin – flaunting her curves in her new high-street swimwear collection. Here she talks to Liz Jones about body image, mellow motherhood, the rich legacy (and A-list fans) of the Spice Girls – and finding love

I've seen remarkably few celebrities naked. But I have seen Geri Halliwell in just her knickers. It was ten years ago, we were on a magazine cover shoot in Los Angeles, and Geri was trying to decide what to put on. I remember she was as small as a ten-year-old. This was during Geri’s super-aerobicised, super-Ashtanga-yogafied period. She had requested only vegetables and brown rice on the shoot. She seemed tense, lonely and, despite the nakedness, terribly unhappy in her own skin.

What a difference a decade makes. I meet Geri again in her lovely home in Highgate, North London. I’m not supposed to tell you about her house, but I can’t resist revealing that it’s all warm wood, huge sofas and perfect roses, everywhere. She is in a long sweater and over-the-knee socks, hair still wet from the shower. Not much make-up, apart from a slick of mascara. ‘I remember that shoot,’ she says, tucking her legs under her on the sofa. ‘I wore minimal make-up and my own T-shirt. And I remember the superstar photographer just sat there snoozing while all his minions set up the shot, then he just pressed a button!’

I ask how the past ten years have treated her. She’s now 38, and has become a mum, for starters. Her daughter Bluebell is four and a half. She laughs.

‘My daughter is the biggest gift; I’ve said it so many times and it sounds like a cliché, but the thing about being a parent is when you think you’ve cracked it, and you’re on top of your game, they change again and you have to catch up and adjust. I feel such a responsibility to instil good values in her, to be polite, to have discipline.’

The biggest transformation is that Geri now seems happy with how she looks. She has just designed a range of swimwear for Next, and modelled the collection for the catalogue. She spreads the bikinis and proofs of the photos on her huge wooden coffee table. ‘I always find it hard to find a bikini that fits me, because I have quite big breasts. There’s intelligence in the structure – there’s an architect involved in making your boobs look good, does that make sense? And the prices are reasonable, too: £38 for a bikini.’

She says that because her weight has always been up and down – ‘I’ve had small boobs, big boobs, curvy bum, skinny bum’ – she knows what works for different body shapes.

‘I’ve got one of those bodies that fluctuates, so I’ve had to really think about the construction. You know when you feel you’ve got a bit of a tummy? On holiday you want to eat well, have that freedom. This range is cut to flatter your body.’ She says she has been very hands-on in the design process, and I tell her that every celebrity always says that. ‘I always loved fashion but I’ve never been a slave to it. I’ve always collected swatches of fabric I like, so I was able to show them exactly what I wanted. Even in the Spice Girls, I would always have input into the costumes. That dress I wore for the Brits was my idea: someone sent me a black Gucci dress so I sewed on a Union Jack tea towel to liven it up a bit.’ Why hasn’t she designed a collection before now? ‘The funny thing is, I was a shop assistant in Next, a Saturday girl. The collaboration just feels right.’

I ask if she went on a diet and exercise binge before the catalogue shoot. She suffered from bulimia when she was younger, and was addicted to exercise. ‘Coming up to it, my natural instinct would have been to sort my body out, embark on a mad regime. But I don’t have time because I’m a mother; all I did was walk Bluebell to school. The thing is, when I feel like I have to lose weight, the opposite happens. I remember stuffing loads of chocolate on the plane to the shoot, and I thought, “Why don’t you have the courage to show up in a body that’s natural, not overly worked out?”’

She tells me the people at Next offered to airbrush the photos. ‘I said, “Don’t airbrush them. I don’t mind a little help but don’t make my body look what it isn’t.” If you go online – this is groundbreaking for where my head is – there’s a mini film of the Next shoot, and I looked at it once and someone with me said, “Do you mind that bit, that imperfection?” and I said, “No, leave it.”

‘I don’t know if that’s a first, but it’s definitely got better. If you’d asked me ten years ago, I would have been so controlling about how I looked. I feel you have to come to a point where you have to let go, and that’s freeing.’

What a turn-up that Geri, who was once such a slave to perfection – remember that photograph of her on an LA beach, performing a headstand? – has designed a collection that is all about allowing women to feel better about themselves. ‘I thought, “Why not start with something that really helps a woman feel good in the most vulnerable place, on the beach on holiday?”’

Was she worried she might pass on her neuroses to her daughter? ‘I obviously want to give a healthy body image to my own daughter. I think having good examples, eating properly, that’s all one can do – and just be really loving around her. I’ve tried to give her confidence in who she is.’ She laughs. ‘I think she’s all right in the confidence department.’

How did Geri overcome her own problems around food and body image? ‘It comes with time and maturity. There is so much more in the world to be thinking about than the way I look. I just wanted to be free of it. Some days are better than others. The power of food is amazing, making someone go “Mmm”. I love cooking a roast with lovely gravy and enjoying it myself. I’m a nicer person to be around, rather than being too controlling. Who wants to be around that? Being forgiving about my own imperfections, allowing messiness.’

You’re not messy, I say, looking at the immaculate house, the tidy terrace, devoid of the litter of toys. She laughs. ‘The desire for perfection is utterly miserable. I still have dreams, I still have goals, I’m still a little vain, but actually I’m just realising my humanness. Sometimes I’m a curvy, messy person who can say the wrong thing, sometimes fail.’

Perfectionists achieve, though. You’re a worker and an achiever. ‘A little bit of drive is good, but I work better when I’m cheerleading my way into doing something rather than being overly obsessed and saying to myself, “You’ve got to do it otherwise you’re rubbish.” It’s more about going, “Come on, you’re lovely regardless.”’

I tell her she looks the best she ever has. ‘Thank you, that’s very nice. I feel comfortable and OK. I’m much more appreciative of how I look and what I’ve been given. I’ve stopped trying to be something I’m not – accepting that this is my shape and I’ve got to make the best of it.’

The biggest difference, though, in the Geri now to the Geri of ten years ago is that she’s in a happy relationship. She gives me a huge beam when I mention his name: Henry Beckwith, the 32-year-old heir to a property empire and cousin of socialite Tamara. They’ve been together nearly two years. ‘My boyfriend flies a helicopter and that’s very nice. It’s really good because I used to have a big fear of flying but it’s actually helped me, watching him flying and he’s sitting next to me. I literally put my life in his hands.’

Where did they go on their first date? ‘Not in a helicopter. I met him on the beach, and I was in a bikini. Swimwear! It does work.’

It must have taken a degree of confidence, to walk up and ask a Spice Girl on a date. ‘He was bright red, but that’s because of his skin tone. He’s going to kill me for saying that! He didn’t actually chat me up, he sent his mate to try and do it. It was quite funny.’ Do they live together? ‘No.’ Are they going to get married, or have children (her recent visit to a church has sparked engagement rumours)? ‘Not at the moment.’ She catches the eye of her assistant. ‘No. No!’ They both laugh.

Geri says her drive, the ‘extra gas in the tank’, that has got her to where she is now came about because her father died when she was 21; she is still very close to her Spanish mother, Ana. ‘His death had a massive impact. I’d found a much more peaceful, loving, balanced relationship with my father and then he died. And at such a young age, it was a shocking realisation that people can love you and then leave you. And also my parents were divorced, so I felt very distrusting of relationships and depending on anybody so I tried to become very self-dependent, which is a bit lonely. And so I was never present or available for relationships, not even one with myself. I was just consistently working all the time, or looking for a father figure.

Is she allowing Henry to look after her?

‘To a degree. It’s part of being a Leo. I really try to allow the man to be the man. We are told as little girls that Prince Charming is going to save us and whisk us off to his palace and there is a part of me that thinks, “Oh, wouldn’t that be nice?” And then someone’s brandishing the words “girl power”, telling us we’ve got to be independent, strong females. I think I’m a bit of both, which is quite confusing.’

How is Henry coping? ‘It takes a hell of a strong man to be with someone like me. I think he has a strong enough sense of self, but what I love about him is that he loves me for me. He doesn’t buy into any of the image. He finds it amusing and fun, but he’s not intoxicated by it.’

A lesser man might be jealous that she gets all the attention. ‘No, he’s very supportive and very encouraging. He’s strong and very kind. He won’t let me push him around. He’s the first alpha male I’ve gone out with and that’s why it’s working. He makes it a little bit challenging sometimes, but I love it that he’s a strong man. I went out with a doormat and he resented me and I ended up resenting him, so I appreciate that Henry is a strong man.’

Is money an issue? ‘Regardless of their background, when you are with that other person, within four walls, that’s what matters. It’s about their character and quality. I have a lot in common with Henry: we’re both fun, active, sporty. I’m very playful, I’m like a tomboy in certain ways. But for me the most important thing is integrity, loyalty and spirit, the kindness of the person. The character of the man. Completely fundamental. They’ve got to be funny and you’ve got to fancy them, too.’

I wonder if she is still close to the other Spice Girls, if she still even thinks much about those days. ‘They’re like family members to me. It’s one of those things that I don’t see them all the time but when I do, it feels like yesterday and we go back to our original roles. It’s quite funny.’ They’ve all turned out pretty well. ‘None of us has shaved our heads and ended up in rehab.’

I wonder too why she bothers to do things like be a judge on The X Factor, or design and model clothes for Next. She has enough money to never work again. ‘I am naturally, authentically, a creative person. I love painting with my daughter – we have creative sessions! That’s just who I am. In the band, I’d be in the studio writing lyrics, Victoria would be out shopping for Prada shoes. She’s always loved high-end fashion. I’m incredibly proud of her.’ Will she make another record? ‘Maybe! I’m passionate about music and I’ll always be involved in the business – I’m managing a band that you’ll see at some point. It’s very exciting. I’m a mummy, I like to nurture…’

I remind her of the documentary she made as she left the Spice Girls. That shot of her sitting on the stairs of her mansion in the country, looking afraid and alone, apart from the presence of Harry, her shih-tzu. ‘God, yes, I remember that. No, I don’t have that house any more. It’s quite hard to be objective about that time, but I’m definitely in a different place to where I was. Actually, I think I feel in certain ways I’m doing full circle. I went to see Lady Gaga in concert, and we saw each other backstage and it was really nice because there wasn’t anybody else around, and she said, “You know, Geri, you really inspired me, I really tuned in to what you stood for.” I am that girl again, the girl I was at the beginning.’

Does she ever wish all this had never happened, the fame?

‘No, not at all. I completely appreciate that I’m in a very unique, privileged position. What a safari my life has been. I just think, wow! I feel very, very lucky.’

Victoria has Marmalade Cravings

Victoria Beckham has reportedly developed a pregnancy craving for marmalade.

The former Spice Girl announced that she and husband David are to become parents for the fourth time earlier this month. The 36-year-old, believed to be around four months pregnant, is expected to give birth in the US.

"Victoria's having a lot of tea and toast with lashings of marmalade," a source told The Sun. "She can't get enough of the stuff. Mostly she's been having it on toast, accompanied by lots of cups of tea."

They added: "And although she looked a little peaky last week, she's not having morning sickness like she has done before."

Spice Girls 2012 Olympic Bid

Geri Halliwell's Olympic bid for a Spice Girls performance at the event faces a major hurdle – Victoria Beckham aka Posh Spice.

Mrs. Beckham is just not that keen on a 2012 gig even though Melanie Chisholm, Melanie Brown and Emma Lee Bunton are on board.

But Geri tells me she’s working on it. “It would be an amazing privilege to represent our country in 2012. So we’ll discuss it with Victoria and see what she thinks,” she said at her Next swimwear range launch.

Halliwell: 'I'm realising my Humanness'

The Spice Girl, who recently launched a swimwear collection for Next, admitted that after years of body image issues, including bulimia, she no longer craves "perfection".

"There is so much more in the world to be thinking about than the way I look," she told The Mail On Sunday. "I just wanted to be free of it. I'm a nicer person to be around, rather than being too controlling. Being forgiving about my own imperfections, allowing messiness.

"The desire for perfection is utterly miserable. I still have dreams, I still have goals, I'm still a little vain, but actually I'm just realising my humanness. Sometimes I'm a curvy, messy person who can say the wrong thing, sometimes fail.

"A little bit of drive is good, but I work better when I'm cheerleading my way into doing something rather than being overly obsessed and saying to myself, 'You've got to do it otherwise you're rubbish'. It's more about going, 'Come on, you're lovely regardless'."

The singer added that an important moment in her realisation process came when she refused to be airbrushed in her Next campaign.

Mini Interview with Melanie C

Last night I attended the InStyle and Lancome pre-BAFTA's party at Shoreditch House and caught up with Mel C, who looked gorgeous in a black ASOS jumpsuit and some classic black peeptoe shoes. She told me and FabUK she wasn't staying too late because she's in the studio at the moment, but she had time for a quick chat with us and shared her excitement over the latest Spice baby and engagement news as well as chatting about the Brit girls she finds inspiring:

You must be so happy for Emma Bunton on her engagement and baby news, and Victoria too!

Emma's engaged, she's having a baby, Victoria's having a baby again, it's a really exciting time for all of us girls. We saw Victoria in December and she kept it really quiet, I didn't have a clue! I think it's really nice — Emma and Victoria being pregnant together, when one of your friends is pregnant it's really nice to share the experience together.

Does it make you broody again?

You know what, I would like to have more children, but you have to do it when it's the right time for you don't you? My little girl is so fantastic, I'm just really enjoying her at the moment.

What are you working on at the moment?

The new album! It's going really well, I'm really excited. I'm working mostly in London, we're doing some writing in Germany and Sweden as well. I'm here with Jodie Harsh tonight, we're doing some dance stuff together. I've worked with Andy Burrows, we did some stuff together. I'm working with lots of people I've worked with in the past and a lot of new people as well, I'm doing a lot of experimenting and seeing what comes of it all.

What have you been inspired by lately?

You know what I find inspiring? There are so many great young women in British music, I think it's a great time for girls. And these girls who've got credibility - they're great role models, they make great music, good performers, with great voices. People like Adele, Ellie Goulding, Marina and the Diamonds, and that inspires me to continue and fly the flag for girl power!

And you guys no doubt inspired them too!

Yeah! I know Marina was a fan, so it's really nice when now you hear people saying "I love the Spice Girls".

How's the Spice Girls musical coming along?

We've sat down and read the storyline and seen the songs that are going to be used, it's all very early stages. First drafts at the moment. It's exciting for us to hopefully have our music being performed night after night in the theatre.

It was lovely to catch up with Mel at the party, and I'm looking forward to checking out her new album — she hopes to release it in the Autumn.

Geri launches new Swimwear Range

Back in her Spice Girl days Ginger Spice wasn’t afraid to flash a bit of flesh donning provocative and skimpy outfits as the loudest member of the girl group.

But how times have changed and instead of using the opportunity to showcase her healthy figure Geri Halliwell left the bikini demonstration to the models.

The 38-year-old launched her Geri by Next swimwear range at the Savoy hotel in London earlier today but chose not to model her designs herself.

Standing next to two stunning models, the petite singer posed for photos wearing a plunging and short navy playsuit, but didn’t fancy stripping down fully to show off her new range.

The pretty singer was sporting sun-kissed tresses and was literally glowing showing off a deep and rather unnatural-looking tan.

One model, who was wearing a pretty pink two-piece bikini and flat sandals, dwarfed Geri despite the fact the singer was wearing sky-high nude wedges.

Dressed in a leopard-print monokini, another model also stood tall over the 5ft 2inch singer.

Talking about the collection, Geri told MailOnline: 'It's about inspiring confidence with great looking swimwear for all body shapes.'

The range which includes a number of beach dresses and playsuits has been designed by Geri ‘for real women of all shapes and sizes.’

The singer added: ‘This is a collection that makes you look good and feel fabulous.’

While Geri didn’t showcase her new range on her own body she has posed for pictures for Next wearing her swimwear and showing off her toned and slim figure.

Geri she has come a long way since 2001 when shocking pictures of her looking scarily thin performing yoga surfaced.

Showing off her fabulous figure the mother-of-one was looking happy and healthy at the launch of her reasonably priced range.

Whereas her fellow Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham’s pieces can cost hundreds and even thousands of pounds, Geri’s range is for the average women.

Geri’s bikinis are around £18 and prices rise up to £50 for more expensive items in the range such as her white crochet maxi-dress.

Mel C At The Instyle Party 2011

It appears Mel C is wearing a jumpsuit. A fitted jumpsuit. With short sleeves and a belt. Now, I bet this is one of those pieces which looks much better in real life but the fact of the matter is, I'm not there. Neither are you.

We only have this photograph (and I've seen others, but picked the best) to see her outfit. Unfortunate, no? I think it's the fabric that's bothering me most. If it was a soft silk which still fit close to her body, I'd be more inclined to like it, but this looks like stiff gaberdine which has no movement to it. Stick to the basics Mel C, or don't buy jumpsuits from H&M. One or the other.

Mel B and Stephen at Cleo Restaurant

Her outlandish leopard-print and platform shoe ensembles earned her the nickname Scary during her Spice Girls heyday.

But last night Mel B appeared to be taking a leaf out of former band mate Victoria Beckham's book, turning up for dinner in Los Angeles stylishly attired in a chic black dress.

The same could not be said for her husband Stephen Belafonte though.

Stephen wore a bizarre tartan blazer for their date at Cleo restaurant, inside The Redbury hotel, on famed Hollywood and Vine.

He teamed the eye-catching jacket with jeans and a black shirt.

Mel B, 35, added some sex appeal to her little black dress with pushed-up cleavage and waist-length blonde curls.

Clutching his hand, chic Mel did not look perturbed by her husband's odd ensemble.

The couple dined at Middle Eastern-themed Cleo, part of the exclusive sbe hospitality group, which also runs SLS Hotel, Katsuya restaurant and Hyde Lounge.

Cleo opened in November to rave reviews, and has already been rated among the top ten restaurants in the city by Los Angeles magazine.

Hilary Duff was also spotted at the celebrity favourite last night.

The mother-of-two, who stars in her own reality series It's A Scary World, was in high spirits, seemingly ignoring the recent press attention over her sister's revelation that they no longer speak.

Danielle Brown, who used to be extremely close to her famous sibling, has revealed that the pair have not been in contact for two years.

She told OK magazine that their falling out came after the family 'expressed concerns' over Mel's relationship with Belafonte.

But Mel and Stephen, who married in June 2007, looked closer than ever last night.

They have just returned from a ski holiday in Utah, where the former Spice Girl attempted skiing for the first time.

She tweeted this week though that the sport was 'not her thing' and she preferred watching others doing it.

The singer revealed on her TV show recently that the couple attend marriage counselling.

She said: 'The good thing about relationship counselling is that problems get squashed before they get too big.

'We get touch ups on the way, so we'll never get to the point where we're like, "Oh my god, we're getting divorced." '

She added: 'I think we'll just kill each other instead!'

Emma announces engagement on 'DOI'

Emma Bunton announced her engagement to long-term partner Jade Jones live on Dancing On Ice tonight - the delight of her co-stars.

The former Spice Girl, 35, made the revelation to her show co-stars and judges during a commercial break - and brandished a huge diamond ring to the cameras and viewers at home when the show returned.

Posting on her Twitter during the break, as well as putting up a picture of herself sporting her rock, she wrote: 'Yahooooo I'm Engaged! Love you Jade! I'm a very happy lady!!'

Jade proposed to the star on Friday night as they celebrated her 35th birthday.

Afterwards, Emma Tweeted: 'I had the best birthday ever!'

Emma has been with the former Damage boyband-star-turned-chef, 31, for 11 years.

The former Spice Girl and judge on the show announced in November that she was pregnant with their second child.

They are expecting a sibling next spring for their three-year-old son Beau.

Dancing On Ice host Phillip Schofield made the announcement live on the show, saying: 'Breaking news! Emma has just announced her engagement! Just during the break then.'

Co-host Holly Willoughby - who is also pregnant with her second child chipped in: 'You've got a baby on the way and now a fiancée!'

An absolutely beaming Emma then replied - as she was almost drowned out by the cheers and applause from the audience: 'I know! I'm a very very happy lady. It's amazing! Thanks you so much.'

The star was wearing a beautiful black lace maternity 'Flutter' dress from Tiffany Rose, which retails for £139.

It's one of Emma's favourite labels for mothers-to-be, and she's not alone - the label has also been seen on blooming yummy mummies Myleene Klass, Charlotte Church and Natasha Kaplinsky.

Davinia McCall was one of the first of Emma's friend to congratulate her after the first part of the Dancing On Ice live show, Tweeting to her: 'OMG r u engaged??? Well done !!!!! So happy for u both!'

Emma replied: 'Yes! Ahhhhhhh so happy!'

Bunton and Jones live together in Hertfordshire and only last year, the former Spice Girl had insisted that they were in no rush to wed.

She told the Mail: 'It's not on the agenda; we don't even talk about it. We've been together for ten years and we're so close - we share the childcare rather than have a nanny so we're often together 24/7.

'I can honestly say that we're really happy, so we don't feel the need to formalise it.'

Just a few months after giving birth to Beau, Bunton went on tour with the Spice Girls, even bringing the tot on stage during one of their New York concerts.

David launches hooker court battle

David Beckham has filed a five-page statement with a Californian court as part of his libel suit over allegations that he slept with a prostitute.

In the legal documents, the footballer claims that the accusations caused him "severe emotional distress, including extended humiliation, embarrassment, anger and worry". Irma Nici alleges that she first met with the star at New York's Le Parker Meridien Hotel, but Beckham had checked into the Waldorf-Astoria with his LA galaxy teammates.

He says: "As is my custom when I arrive at a hotel on a road trip before a match, a massage therapist came to my hotel room within a few hours after I checked to in to give me a massage.

"I recall that the therapist did not leave my hotel room until the very early morning. My security team was with me before, during and after the massage. After the therapist left I went to sleep. I have reviewed the daily logs prepared by my security detail which confirm my recollections."

Speaking of claims he paid Nici $10,000 in cash, he added: "I do not carry around thousands of dollars in cash when I travel. The only way I could get access to $10,000 in cash would be to get it from my management team. I did not request any member of my management team to provide me with thousands of dollars of cash when I was in New York in August 2007."

He also denies claims that he met the prostitute on another occasion in London, saying that he was visiting his father in hospital at the time, who was recovering from a heart attack.

Beckham is seeking $25 million (£16.5m) from Nici and In Touch publisher Bauer for running the story in September last year.

Victoria Beckham to have baby in US

David and Victoria Beckham's new baby will be born in the US, it has been claimed.

According to the News of the World, the Spice Girl's plans to give birth in the UK have been changed because David needs to be back at LA Galaxy when the child is due in July.

A source said: "Victoria absolutely loves being back in Britain. It's made her realise how much she's missed it. She'd quite happily stay until the baby is born but David's football commitments are out of her hands and she'll always keep family together."

The decision means that the child will have dual citizenship.The couple are also apparently looking to purchase a larger house in LA to accommodate the new arrival.

The pair announced that they were expecting their fourth child last week.

It's been a long time since the Spice Girls were at the top of the charts, but Geri Halliwell doesn't appear to have lost her fondness for miniskirts

But the lady formerly known as Ginger Spice took things a bit too far when she attended business meetings in Central London earlier this week.

The 38-year-old seemed to be dressing at least 20 years younger than her actual age as she emerged from her car dressed in a tiny tartan mini which would probably have been more suited to a teenager.

And just to make the skirt appear even shorter than it actually was, Geri teamed it with high-heeled ankle boots, thick grey tights and a short white fur coat.

An oversized and overstuffed grey handbag completed the bizarre look. And at one point Geri seemed to be having trouble preserving her dignity, holding the hem of her skirt down as she prepared to climb into her car.

Geri has been seen recently wearing even less however after she launched her new swimwear range for high street store Next. The singer, who modelled the range herself, said recently that it would feature 'great looking swimwear for all body shapes.

'It's for real women of all shapes and sizes. Everything is mix and match, so you can choose the exact shapes and styles that suit you.This is a collection that makes you look good and feel fabulous.'

She was also recently spotted on a skiing holiday with her current boyfriend Henry Beckwith. The pair were looking closer than ever on the slopes, fuelling speculation that a 2011 wedding might be in the offing.

This year looks set to be pretty big for Spice Girl Geri Halliwell. Not only is she beavering away in a creative role on the new Spice Girls musical, she’s also launching her first swimwear range with high street store Next.

And from what the star tells me she has a special affiliation to the store. “Well I used to work there years ago,” she revealed. “So the range is a dream come true. I never thought all those years ago that I’d one day be designing for Next.

“I’ve worked hard on it too. I’m not just lending my name. I’ve gone out, sourced all the fabrics, made the designs with a team and I’m modeling in the campaign too. Which was a lot of fun.

“I’ve just been out to shoot the second campaign and the range is great. I want it to be affordable for people and having worn it all myself I know that it’s a good product and I’m proud of it.”

As her fellow Spice Girl Victoria Beckham announced her fourth pregnancy, Sporty Spice was playing with her own little bundle of joy, enjoying a dip in the sea in Barbados.

And showing off her muscles Mel C enjoyed a day at the beach with her daughter Scarlet, who may well have her own playmate if Posh gives birth to a baby girl this summer.

Miss Chisholm, 36, was pictured enjoying the warm Caribbean waters but it was a girls only affair as partner Thomas Starr was left on the shore.

With a brightly-coloured swimming vest on, 23-month-old Scarlet clung on to her mother's back as Melanie, 36, took her in the Caribbean waters for a dip, an activity the pair seem to enjoy daily.

Mel showed off a taut figure in a striped bikini top and black bikini bottoms and judging from her skin tone, she has been using sunscreen to protect her skin from the sun's strong rays.

And when out of the water the mother-of one covered up with a straw hat and striped vest and baggy denim jeans.

Scarlet had been treated to a piggy back in the sea the day before and seemed happy to hitch a ride on Mel.

The girls were joined by Starr who laughed and joked with Melanie as they soaked up the Bajan sunshine.

Starr then took over the parenting duties while Mel enjoyed the warm sea by herself, before heading back onto the sand to dry off and donning a straw hat for a stroll along the beach.

The family are enjoying the New Year break before heading back to the UK where Melanie will begin work on her fifth album.

She's never made a secret of her desire to have another baby, so it's no wonder Victoria Beckham is struggling to contain her excitement about welcoming a fourth child into her family.

The 36-year-old star, who confirmed yesterday she is expecting another baby with husband David, thanked fans this morning for their well wishes.

She wrote on her Twitter page: 'Thank u so much for your kind and beautiful messages!!!we are all so happy and very excited!!!!!!x vb x'

It is thought the Beckhams are hoping for a girl to add to their brood after having three boys – Brooklyn, now 11, Romeo, eight, and Cruz, five. The baby is expected in the summer, but close friends say the couple do not want to know the sex of the child before it is born.

Beckham posted details on his Facebook page telling fans and friends: ‘I’ve got great news to tell you. Victoria and I are expecting a fourth child this summer. 'The boys are very excited about the arrival of their new brother or sister.’

The couple are understood to have told extended friends and family over the weekend – hosting a celebratory dinner last night.

The former Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer has often hinted at her desire for a daughter. She said in one interview that should could imagine ‘painting her nails, putting on make-up, and choosing clothes’ with her.

Last year, she said: ‘Everyone keeps asking me if I would like to have a little girl and I think, at some point, if I am lucky enough to have another baby, that would be great.

'If I am blessed enough.’

But in recent months she has been more circumspect – even telling the forthcoming issue of Vogue in which she is cover star: ‘Maybe one day another baby, but at this stage I think the chances of a girl are quite slim.’

Sources close to Mrs Beckham told the Daily Mail that she plans to work through as much of her pregnancy as possible insisting it is ‘business as usual’ – as she has for her previous three.

She will have to have another Caesarean section because of the risks of a natural birth after already having had the operation.

The couple, who have been married for almost 12 years, have put on a show of unity in recent months after being dogged by allegations that Beckham had been unfaithful.

They filed a lawsuit against a U.S. magazine that alleged he slept with a prostitute. Beckham has also denied claims in court papers by the ex-husband of Hollywood jeweller Shery Shabani that she had an affair with him.

The couple are in Britain until the end of February while she prepares her latest collection for fashion week in London and New York, and he trains with Tottenham Hotspur before returning to the U.S. for the start of the football season there.

The couple’s main home is a £14million mansion in Beverly Hills but they have yet to decide where they will live once his contract with LA Galaxy expires in November.

Beckham, 35, had been in talks with Tottenham to return on a ten-week loan but the deal fell through.

Speculation had increased that they would return to the UK after they put on hold plans to sell their £18million home in Hertfordshire, known as Beckingham Palace.

The couple's three sons, Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, 8, and Cruz, 5, were said to be 'very excited' at the prospect of a new brother or sister.

The Beckhams have previously spoken of their keenness to add to their family and it is thought Victoria is keen to add a girl to their brood.

Victoria, 36, joins former Spice Girl bandmate Emma Bunton in being pregnant. They were both at Gordon Ramsay's recent Christmas party, after which Posh drove home.

The Beckhams married in 1999 and live in LA where David plays for LA Galaxy, although there have been suggestions they could soon spend more time in the UK.

Beckham, 35, left the UK in July 2003 when he signed for Real Madrid but his wife initially stayed behind.

The family settled in the Spanish capital before the footballer was transferred in July 2007 to LA Galaxy and they bought a £14million mansion in Beverly Hills.

Last year, Victoria left open the prospect of more children when she said: ‘I think one day, if we’re blessed to have more children, it would be amazing.

'It’s a lot having three boys. So, we’re just enjoying the boys at the moment. But who knows, one day?’

And in an interview with Vogue magazine, she admitted that she would never say never to another baby - but hinted she had given up on her hope of a baby girl.

‘Maybe one day another baby, but at this stage I think the chances of a girl are quite slim,' she said.

When Victoria was pregnant with their second son Romeo, she is believed to have told Brooklyn first who then toddled over to David to break the news.

She said at the time: ‘Brooklyn was the first person I broke the news to after my doctor confirmed I was pregnant. Then I sent him over to David to tell him the secret.

'I was in tears as he toddled over to his daddy and said "Mummy is going to have a baby". I hoped it would make him feel he is involved with the new baby.'

The former singer has also come in for some ridicule by claiming when she was pregnant with Romeo that she loved 'giving birth'.

This is despite having three Caesareans for her children, which coined the phrase 'too posh to push'.

She will have to have another Caesarean because the health risks of a natural birth are too great after having the operation several times.

The pregnancy announcement comes as Victoria features on the front cover of Vogue - the sixth time she has landed the prestigious cover.

The Spice Girl admitted that the reduced judging panel - following the departure of Nicky Slater, and Karen Barber becoming head coach - means she'll have the chance to give more detailed critiques.

The former Spice Girl appeared besotted with her beau as they leaned in for a hug before taking to the slopes to show off their skiing skills. At one point, Henry even used his girlfriend as a support, leaning on her back as he seemed to struggle to keep his balance on the snow.

Beckham 'refuses Spice Girls Reunion'

Victoria Beckham has reportedly declined an offer to perform with the Spice Girls at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

According to the News of the World, the singer wants to focus on motherhood and her fashion label and has given her blessing for the other girls to replace her. Husband David and band boss Simon Fuller are said to have been trying to persuade her to take part.

A source said: "There is no way Victoria will perform with the Spice Girls ever again. She's not a spoilsport but she doesn't feel she's a good enough performer to go back there again all these years on. The others are keen to do the performance but it's just not for Victoria anymore.

Melanie C is working on new music, according to reports.

The singer, who has released four solo albums away from the Spice Girls, is said to be writing songs with ex-Razorlight drummer-turned-solo singer Andy Burrows, the Daily Star reports.

A source said: "Mel has been really impressed with Andy’s solo album and loves the stripped-back simple feel of it. She thinks he’s really talented and they’re on the same page when it comes to songwriting."

The 'I Turn To You' star, who has notched up ten solo top 40 hits, revealed last year that her next album will have "big rock numbers".
